IN CONVERSATION WITH DAMI TNT
interview by JANA LETONJA
Dami TNT is a dynamic Nigerian singer, songwriter, and producer redefining the afropop and afrofusion music landscape in 2025. His new EP ‘Supanova’ celebrates love, ambition, success, and self-belief. Written and produced by the Lagos-based musician himself, the EP is a bold statement of Dami TNT’s impeccable artistry and versatility – blending culture, storytelling, and innovation into a compelling sonic adventure.
‘Supanova’ is such a bold and vibrant project. What was the inspiration behind this EP, and what story did you want to tell through these five tracks?
Making ‘Supanova’ for me was really personal. It was more than telling a story, it was real life, finding your way out from a dark place where there’s seems to be no light at the end of the tunnel on just pure faith and belief in God. You just need to have that confidence and zeal to keep going and fighting, having at the back of your mind that you’re already a winner. I wanted to pass a positive emotion of hope to the listeners. To never give up, keep believing and keep going even when the odds don’t look to be in your favour.
Each song on the EP carries a unique vibe and message. Do you have a favorite track, and why?
My favorite song iis ‘Kini Mo Fa’ because I’m still in awe that I had a legend on the song, Wande Coal. He’s someone that I’ve loved and looked up to. Also, his verse was telling my story as well, it felt fated. But I love all the songs regardless.
You explore themes of love, ambition, and self-belief in this project. How do these themes reflect your personal journey as an artist?
These themes are deeply intertwined with my personal journey as an artist, and they resonate with the challenges and triumphs I've experienced along the way. Love is a core foundation of my creative process and as an artist, I’ve always aimed to evolve, to take risks, and to explore new sounds in my work. There have been moments of self-doubt, times when I questioned my abilities or the value of my work, but through perseverance and a commitment to my vision, I’ve learned to trust myself and my voice. Together, these themes encapsulate the heart of my artistic journey. They remind me why I create and inspire me to continue sharing my stories with the world.
Afropop, amapiano, R&B, and dancehall influences can be heard throughout the EP. How do you approach blending different genres while keeping your sound authentic?
My sytle is a reflection of how I grew up. Raised in Lagos, we have our slangs, how we speak with certain intonations, speaking different languages like pidgin english, igbo and yoruba. These are all things that are engrained in me and how I stay true to my sound and style.
As a producer, I try to listen to as much music as possible and understand it, perfect it and experiment with my style. This helps me not get bored and intrigued. I guess my listeners would feel the same way because it gives unpredictability and they never know where I’m coming from. With this, my sound can always stay fresh as time goes on.
‘Enjoyment’ is such a feel-good anthem! What does enjoyment mean to you personally?
Living life without stress. Taking everything one step at a time. Enjoying the process, the journey.
Your aunt played a big role in recognizing your talent early on. How did her support shape your path in music?
Not only my aunt, but my mum as well. She got me my first keyboard where I started practicing at home. As I grew up in a family that loves music, my siblings also play a music instrument. My aunt’s support was profound because she was a music teacher in my school, so I had direct access to the music lab where I would take out instruments for social nights and gatherings. We would create amazing music back then in school.
TNT Entertainment was a key part of your early music journey. How did that experience help you grow as an artist and producer?
I was just doing music for fun, until we started TNT Entertainment, and it felt like we were onto something. We were young, but we all shared the same dream and vision.
Afrobeats is taking over the world. How do you see your music contributing to the global movement of the genre?
Afrobeats’ global rise is incredibly exciting, and I see my music going as far as possible, adding my voice to a movement that celebrates African creativity, resilience, and joy. I’m honored to contribute to a genre that’s not just shaping the sound of today, but also paving the way for future generations of artists.
With ‘Supanova’ gaining recognition, what’s next for you? Any upcoming collaborations or projects we should look out for?
Definitely a lot of projects in store and collaborations in the works. ‘Supanova’ is just a tip of the iceberg. Stay tuned.
If you could collaborate with any international artist outside of afrobeats, who would it be and why?
Drake, Bruno Mars and Chris Brown. I love their sound.
