IN CONVERSATION WITH KUN

interview by MAREK BARTEK

Chinese singer-songwriter and music producer Kun has been recently appointed as Global Ambassador for Versace. Kun explores diverse music styles, including Future R&B, Urban R&B, Hip- hop, Pop, Dance, and Electronic Soul. Currently, he is collaborating in the studio with top writers and producers in the US to craft his upcoming global music project.

You’ve achieved remarkable milestones as a solo artist, from “Lover” garnering billions of streams to topping global charts, all that just in 5 years. How do you stay inspired to keep pushing  boundaries in your music?

Honestly, I’m always absorbing and creating. ‘Lover ’was a great starting point, but for me, it’s really about the journey. Just keep moving forward—enjoying the process itself keeps me inspired.

Your music blends diverse genres like Future R&B, Urban R&B, and Electronic Soul. What do you  love about these particular genres, and how do you believe they enhance your lyrical work?

Every genre reflects a different chapter in my life—a stage of growth or self-discovery. When I write  lyrics, I take a lot of inspiration from the classics, from legends who’ve paved the way. They’ve shown me how to channel deep emotions, and blending these styles lets me express those feelings  in fresh, modern ways.

From writing lyrics to producing music, you’re deeply involved in every stage of the process. Which part of making music excites you the most, and why?

The most exciting part is definitely the early stage—starting from scratch with just an idea, hanging  out in the studio, and experimenting. That’s when everything feels alive, and the energy is so inspiring.  When it comes to the later stages, like finalising production, it gets tough. That’s where it becomes a meticulous process, requiring a lot of patience and precision. It’s not as easy as it looks, especially when you’ve been involved from the start. The beginning is pure joy, but the end is where you really push your professionalism.

You’re collaborating with top writers and producers in the U.S. for your upcoming global project. Can you share any insights into how this creative process has shaped your vision as an artist?

These sessions have been very transformative for me. My mindset, creativity, vision, and even the  way I sing have all evolved a lot. These changes will really show in my upcoming work, and next year, I think there will be a major breakthrough—it’ll be a milestone moment.

Working with different people has been inspiring. What’s special about this process, is how we balance music and life. We’ll hang out at the house, have BBQs, chat, and make music in a really relaxed way. It feels less like work and more like bonding with friends.

The cultural exchange and learning new perspectives—not just on music, but on life—spark so many  new ideas. This upcoming project will reflect all these experiences and the growth we’ve had during this time.

As the Global Ambassador for Versace, how does your personal style resonate with the brand’s bold identity?

Versace is one of the most recognisable names in the world, and when you wear Versace, you are  part of a heritage of excellence that goes far beyond fashion. We both share this courage to explore the unconventional and create with a forward-thinking mindset. It’s about the character, personality,  and freedom to be yourself.

You’ve worked with some of the world’s biggest fashion brands and graced the covers of iconic magazines. What role does fashion play in expressing your artistic identity?

I think fashion is a way for me to show the different sides of who I am. Every magazine cover feels  like a new story, like you’re meeting a different version of me. Fashion helps people understand who I am not just on the surface, but inside, as well.

What has been the most memorable moment in your fashion journey, and how has it influenced  your perspective on music or creativity?

I think it was at the recent Versace Spring-Summer 2025 fashion show in Milan. The venue was this  classical castle in Milan and Donatella filled it with powerful fashion, music and staging. It was an  amazing feeling of this classical setting and luxurious fashion clashed with contemporary music and  style. It’s really shown me the power of the unexpected and it’s something I’m bringing into my own  creativity, too. When it comes to music, though, I get the most inspiration during my concerts— especially from the energy and connection with the audience.

With millions of fans across platforms, your influence extends far beyond music. How do you  approach using your platform to connect with and inspire your audience?

I see my fans more like family or friends. I always encourage them to be brave, to chase their dreams,  and to stay true to themselves. Don’t let challenges defeat you—resilience and perseverance are the key messages I want to share.

Looking back and seeing how far you’ve come—from music to fashion and beyond—what are you most proud of, and what do you envision for the next phase of your career?

Honestly, I never feel 100% satisfied. While I’m thankful of the journey I’ve taken, I see it as just the foundation for what’s next. In the coming years, I hope to reach the artistic level I’ve always dreamed of.

When you’re not creating music or working on campaigns, how do you relax and recharge?

I love traveling to different places to learn about their cultures, explore their way of life, and see  unique natural landscapes. Observing the little things of life and visiting local art exhibitions inspires  me. It’s a way for me to recharge and find new perspectives.

You’ve achieved so much in multiple industries. Do you have any piece of advice for young creatives out there?

I’m still in the learning process as well, but I think that if you really believe in something, you should  just be brave and fight for it. Don’t ever give up, no matter how hard it gets. And never let anyone tell you that you can’t achieve your dreams. Stay determined and keep moving forward.
