IN CONVERSATION WITH MCKENNA ROBERTS

interview by JANA LETONJA

McKenna Roberts stars alongside Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz in the highly anticipated Netflix action-comedy ‘Back in Action’, which premieres on 17th January. Known for her breakout roles in HBO’s ‘Euphoria’ and the action-packed ‘Skyscraper’, McKenna continues to establish herself as a rising talent in Hollywood.

What was your reaction when you got cast on this highly anticipated film, and how was it like working alongside legends like Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz?

I was beyond excited when I got the call. Working with Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx was not only incredibly fun, but I also learned so much from them. I feel so blessed to have had the opportunity to work with such talented actors in the industry.

How did you prepare for the role of Alice in ‘Back in Action’, especially given her background in espionage and high-stakes scenarios?

Preparing for my character, Alice, was challenging because she and I have completely different personalities. I put in a lot of effort to understand her both emotionally and physically, which really paid off in the end.

The film combines action, comedy, and family dynamics. How did you approach balancing the emotional depth of Alice with the high-energy action sequences?

Alice is a very strong character, and I wanted to make sure she didn’t lose that strength in the high-energy scenes. In fact, the adrenaline from the action sequences often amplified the emotions Alice was experiencing, which made her even more dynamic.

Did you have to learn any specific skills for the role, like combat training or stunt work, and what was the most challenging part about it?

I definitely had to do some training with our stunt coordinator to make sure I was fully prepared. The most challenging part was having to pick up someone’s legs while my hands were zip-tied.

From your breakout roles in ‘Euphoria’ and ‘Skyscraper’ to now, how has your approach to acting evolved?

I have definitely grown as an actress. I’ve learned how important it is to do thorough research and really dive into my character’s background. I used to be scared to take risks and step out of my comfort zone, but working with such talented people has given me the confidence and freedom to do just that.

How do you choose your roles? Are there particular themes or challenges you look for in a script?

I love playing characters who are strong and have compelling stories to tell. I’m also eager to explore new genres so I can continue growing as a well-rounded actress.

What inspires you as an actress? Are there any actors or directors who’ve particularly influenced your craft?

As an actress, I’m inspired by stories that resonate with people and feel relatable. Movies can have a profound impact and even change people’s perspectives on life. Watching powerful actresses like Florence Pugh and Zendaya is incredibly inspiring. They constantly push me to become better at my craft.

You’re rapidly becoming a role model for young actors. What advice would you give someone trying to break into the industry?

Don’t give up. Making it in this industry can be challenging, but as long as you stay dedicated and remain open to growth, you’ll be fine. Also, don’t fear rejection. It’s an inevitable part of the job and a valuable learning experience.

When you’re not acting, what passions or hobbies help you recharge and stay creative?

I love spending time with my friends and doing normal teenage things. I also run track, which keeps me active, and I enjoy shopping. It’s a great way to unwind and express myself.

What is coming up next for you, after ‘Back in Action’? Are there any dream roles or collaborations on your bucket list?

I have a few exciting projects in the works that I can’t wait to share. As for dream roles, I’d love to explore characters with complex stories, and I hope to collaborate with inspiring filmmakers and actors like Greta Gerwig, Jordan Peele, or even Florence Pugh someday.
