IN CONVERSATION WITH OZUNA

interview by JANA LETONJA

Multi-award-winning Puerto Rican singer and songwriter Ozuna has not only taken the Latin music world by storm, but has also been making waves in the fashion industry for years. Over the years, Ozuna has become one of the most iconic and listened-to artists in Latin music worldwide, with his career being marked by significant achievements, such as his first Latin Grammy win in 2020 for his collaboration with Rosalía on ‘Yo x Ti, Tú x Mí’. Beyond music, Ozuna was honored with the Soberano Solidario prize for his humanitarian efforts in the Dominican Republic. His commitment to making a positive impact is as strong as his passion for music and fashion.

You’ve been a key figure in Latin music since 2015, and your career has reached incredible heights. Looking back, what do you think has been the most pivotal moment in your music journey so far?

The most pivotal moment in my career wasn’t just one event, it’s been a journey of constant growth and evolution. Early on, breaking into the industry and earning the trust of my fans was a major turning point. When I saw my music reaching people worldwide, crossing barriers, and making an impact, I knew I was doing something special. From selling out my first tours to seeing entire crowds sing my lyrics back to me, those moments remind me why I started in the first place.

Your collaboration with Rosalía on ‘Yo x Ti, Tú x Mí’ was a huge success, and you’ve worked with so many big artists. How do you approach collaborating with artists from different genres, and what draws you to these collaborations?

There have been many key moments in my career, but I think winning my first Latin Grammy in 2020 for ‘Yo x Ti, Tú x Mí’ with Rosalía was truly special. It was a recognition of years of hard work, dedication, and passion for music. Also, every time I release a new album and see how my fans connect with it, that’s a pivotal moment for me. It reminds me why I do what I do.

When it comes to collaborations, I love working with artists who bring something unique to the table. Music is about fusion, about energy, and about creating something that people can feel. When I collaborate, I focus on the chemistry, how our voices and styles complement each other. Whether it’s Rosalía, Anuel AA, Beele, or Snoop Dogg, the key is mutual respect and the desire to create something authentic.

‘Cosmo’ and ‘Afro’ are just a few examples of the diversity of music you’ve released recently. How do you maintain a balance between staying true to your roots and experimenting with new sounds?

I always stay true to where I come from, PR and RD and the Latin urban movement. But I also love to evolve. Music is always changing and I don’t want to limit myself to just one sound. That’s why I experiment with different rhythms and cultures. Whether it’s reggaeton, afro beats or pop, I make sure it still feels like Ozuna.

You’ve been a standout figure at Men’s Paris Fashion Week for the last few years. How would you describe your personal style, and what influences your fashion choices?

My style is about expression. I like to mix luxury with streetwear, classic with bold. Fashion, like music, is about storytelling. It’s a way to show personality. I get inspired by urban culture, art and of course, the designers I work with.

You’ve built relationships with top designers, from Balmain to Kenzo. How do you approach your role as a fashion icon, and what excites you most about working with these designers?

It’s a blessing to work with some of the best designers in the world. I respect their creativity and their craft. When I step into a show or wear their pieces, I feel like I’m representing my culture on a global stage. The most exciting part is being able to blend music and fashion together, creating something bigger than just clothing.

How do you balance being a global music icon and a fashion-forward personality? Do you find similarities between the creative processes in both music and fashion?

Absolutely. Both music and fashion are about vision, creativity and impact. When I make music, I think about how it will make people feel, just like a designer thinks about how a collection will be received. The key is to stay authentic and evolve while staying true to your essence.

With your platform, you have the ability to influence and inspire. How do you use your music and public persona to drive awareness for social causes?

Music is powerful. It connects with people emotionally, so I always try to send messages of positivity, unity and hope. Whether it’s through my lyrics, my foundation, or just setting an example, I want to inspire people to dream big and give back.

Looking at everything you’ve accomplished, how do you stay grounded and motivated? What keeps you inspired every day?

My family keeps me grounded. They remind me of where I came from and why I do what I do. Also, my fans. Seeing their love and support keeps me going. Every day I wake up with the motivation to keep creating, keep pushing, and keep making history.

As one of the most influential Latin artists of your generation, what’s next for you? Do you have any new projects in music or fashion that you’re particularly excited about?

There’s always something exciting coming. I’m working on new music, new collaborations, and expanding my presence in fashion. There are also some big surprises coming that I can’t reveal just yet, but my fans know I always bring something fresh. Stay tuned, lo mejor está por venir!
