IN CONVERSATION WITH PHILIPPINE LEROY-BEAULIEU
interview JANA LETONJA
French-Italian actress Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu is best known internationally for her iconic role as Sylvie, Emily’s boss on Netflix’s hit show ‘Emily in Paris’, which will premiere the first part of its fourth season on 15th August, with the second part following on 12th September.
Philippine, what attracted you to the story of the series and role of Sylvie in ‘Emily in Paris’ when you first read the script?
I lived this character of Sylvie. My mother worked in fashion in Paris, so I was raised in a very fashion forward household from a very young age. Sylvie is so unapologetically herself, and I love that about her and relate to that part of her personality very well.
The series has become one of fan favorite Netflix series throughout its first three seasons. Did you anticipate such success, and what do you believe contributed the most to it?
Nobody anticipated this level of success. Darren Star, our wonderful creator, wrote such a beautiful array of characters with so many different layers that I think people all over the world fell in love with them, even more and more every season. But I can’t speak for the public as why it happened per say. These things are always mysterious.
We are all so eagerly anticipating the fourth season. What can you tease about it, what can we expect when you all return to our screens?
Sylvie is in for revenge and you'll want to root for her every step of the way.
What will Sylvie be up to this season besides revenge, and what can we expect to see happen in her love life?
We absolutely can’t spoil anything. Sylvie will always be very unapologetically herself, no matter the men in her life.

As you live in Paris, what do you generally enjoy the most about filming the series in the city?
I actually prefer to film abroad. Paris is my home and I've spent most of my career filming here. I like adventure and look forward to every opportunity I have to travel and film in a new place. I actually just returned from filming a new movie in Brazil, and loved being immersed in the new culture.
Fashion is a huge part of the series, and we’ve seen a whole lot of it in the past three seasons. How would you sum it up so far, and what can we expect fashion wise from the upcoming season?
More is more.
How would you describe your personal relationship with fashion and your style? Which is your favorite piece in your wardrobe?
A pair of jeans with tennis shoes and a Saint Laurent jacket. Much more comfy and casual than Sylvie's usual glamorous outfits and very high heels.
Having been in the acting industry for a long time, which role has meant to you the most, both professionally and personally, and why?
They all bring their learnings and they’re like my children, so I can’t choose.

Besides acting, what other things are you most passionate about in life?
Traveling is the best. Meeting people, other cultures, different visions of life.
Next up, we’ll be seeing you in the Brazilian film ‘100 Days’. What can you share with us about this upcoming projet of yours, which you are also producing?
This is a beautiful story about the crossing of south Atlantic on a rowing boat by a Brazilian young man, Amir Klink, in the 80s. It’s really a story about a rite of passage and what it takes to become oneself. A story about courage, strength, determination and believing in oneself, directed by Oscar Winner Carlos Saldanha, a great Brazilian director.
