IN CONVERSATION WITH SEBASTIAN HANSEN

interview by JANA LETONJA

Sebastian Hansen made his big studio debut in Warner Bros. live action feature ‘A Minecraft Movie’, inspired by the massively popular video game ‘Minecraft’, which was released globally on 4th April. His previous credits include ‘Just Mercy’, Apple TV mini-series ‘Lisey’s Story’ and Amazon’s critically acclaimed ‘Mozart in the Jungle’.

Can you tell us about your journey into acting? What sparked your passion for it?

I was fortunate to start at a young age, because my parents recognized my natural affinity for acting and thought it was a good fit. I easily connect with others and felt comfortable expressing myself. So, my parents decided to explore creative outlets where I thrive, like playing different musical instruments, singing, theater programs, and acting classes. I also had the ability to memorize long dialogue of scripts at a young age, which is a tremendous asset in my acting journey. I was signed by a talent theatrical agent right away, and at the age of six was casted in my first role, on the series ‘Mozart in the Jungle’. Also, my dad and several of my family members have been involved in the film industry and other creative outlets, so their passion and dedication to the craft has influenced my own passion and journey. I absolutely love being an actor. I guess, down the line, I’d like to become a director or make short films.

You’ve worked on projects like ‘Just Mercy’, ‘Lisey’s Story’, and ‘Mozart in the Jungle’. How has your experience in those films and shows prepared you for this big studio debut?

Working on those projects helped me understand the inner working of a film production. Each experience has taught me something new and prepared me for this big opportunity in the upcoming movie and my career. I have been very lucky to have worked alongside such talented and supportive actors in my career. Actors like Michael B .Jordan, whose work on ‘Just Mercy’ was so inspiring, was a great supporter of my talents and skills. Each experience has taught me something new or a skill I didn’t know but now has served to prepare me along the way. Skills like learning to have a good work ethic, adapting to sudden change, script revisions, you responsibility top your character and performance, while engaging in countless retakes, and also fulfilling my schooling obligations while filming takes a lot of discipline, dedication and commitment. Working on ‘Lisey’s Story’, with the brilliant director Pablo Larrain, and my cast members in his adaptation of Steve Kings’s psychological thriller novel was a remarkable experience, which took my acting abilities and skills to new heights.

You’re starring in a movie inspired by one of the most popular video games of all time. Were you a ‘Minecraft’ fan before landing the role?

Absolutely. I am a huge fan of ‘Minecraft’. It’s such a creative game and I played it all the time with my school mates. It is not just a digital game, it is fun, and an useful learning tool as well that applies problem solving techniques, math skills and coding. During the pandemic, it was one of the games I played the most and still do.

How did you react when you found out you were cast in ‘A Minecraft Movie’ alongside stars like Jason Momoa and Jack Black?

I was overjoyed and honestly in disbelief. Out of millions of young actors, getting cast as Henry felt like a dream come true. I couldn't fully believe it until I set foot on the set of film in New Zealand, and then to work alongside Jason Momoa and Jack Black is the coolest opportunity in my life.

Can you share a little bit about your character and what can fans expect from your role?

I play the character of Henry, Natalie’s brother in the movie. Henry is creative intelligent thinker, trying to find his place in a small town and school, while trying to stay authentic to his big imagination, ideas and his relationship with his sister. Fans will see how he as he explores the overworld, with the rest of the misfit characters, uses his skills and creativity to survive, defeat the evil Malgosha, the leader of the piglings, who hates creativity.

‘Minecraft’ is such a creative and open-ended game. How does the film capture the spirit of the game while telling a compelling story?

The movie allows our characters to explore the world of ‘Minecraft’ while they seek to understand their personal strengths and values. They work together in an inclusive environment that welcomes everyone, just like the game itself. It’s a film that everyone can enjoy.

The teaser trailer already has over 21 million views. How does it feel to be part of something with such a massive fanbase?

It feels incredibly amazing to be a part of this monumental film and to have such a passionate fanbase supporting it.

Why should fans, both ‘Minecraft’ players and non-gamers, be excited to see this film?

This film has something for everyone, whether you're a ‘Minecraft’ player or not. It’s funny, entertaining, and action-packed, and it provides a glimpse into the game that fans will appreciate.

When you are not in front of the camera, what are some of your favorite hobbies?

When I'm not on set, I enjoy spending time with my friends and family, playing video games, traveling, and spending time outdoors. This year, I started boxing and have enjoyed training with my boxing coach.

What kind of roles or projects are you hoping to tackle next?

I really enjoyed working with the stunt team on ‘Minecraft’ and would like to pursue more roles that involve my own stunts, particularly in action films. I’m also interested in exploring a different range of dramatic roles.
