Interview by SAMO ŠAJN

Stefflon Don, is an English rapper and singer. She gained prominence with her 2017 hit single “Hurtin’ Me” (featuring French Montana), which reached number 7 on the UK Singles Chart. Her music blends elements of hip-hop, R&B, dancehall, and grime.

You've had an incredible journey in the music industry. What made you decide to pursue a career in music?

I feel like music chose me rather than the other way around. It’s as if I was born to create and perform music, and there’s nothing else I’d rather do with my life. Music is a big part of who I am, and it’s what I believe I was meant to do. There’s simply no other path that resonates with me as deeply as music does.

Can you describe the concept and vision behind your debut album "Island 54"? How does it reflect your artistic growth?

"Island 54" is a rich tapestry of diverse sounds and themes. The album explores various topics through tracks like “We Build,” “I Am Woman,” “Protect Me,” and “Brothers POV,” where I delve into personal experiences and real-life stories. This debut album marks a significant milestone in my career, as it’s an opportunity for me to present a more authentic and nuanced portrayal of who I am as an artist. It’s a culmination of my artistic evolution and, in my view, represents my best work to date.

What were some of the biggest challenges you faced while creating "Island 54," and how did you overcome them?

The process of crafting "Island 54" was fraught with challenges, from selecting and refining the right tracks to adding new ones. The album took two years to complete, involving extensive travel to different countries and collaborations with various artists. Balancing my versatile musical style and finding a cohesive sound was particularly challenging. However, these hurdles were essential in shaping the final product, and overcoming them was part of the journey that made the album what it is.

How do your personal experiences and background influence your music and lyrics on this new album?

My Jamaican heritage and upbringing in the UK play a crucial role in shaping my music and lyrics. "Island 54" reflects a fusion of Jamaican, Caribbean, and Afro influences, which is a direct result of my diverse background. This blend of cultures enriches my music, providing a unique perspective that informs both the sound and the storytelling in my album.

The music industry is constantly evolving. Where do you see yourself and your music fitting into the future landscape of the industry?

I believe I have a lasting presence in the music industry. My dedication and authenticity will continue to resonate with audiences, ensuring that I remain a relevant and influential artist. As the industry evolves, I’m confident there will always be space for genuine, hard-working artists who bring something unique to the table.

You've performed at major festivals like Glastonbury and Wireless. What do you love most about performing live, and how do you prepare for your shows?

The most rewarding aspect of performing live is the connection I forge with the audience. There’s nothing like the experience of singing my songs and hearing fans sing them back to me. It’s a profound and joyous moment that makes all the hard work worthwhile. To prepare for my shows, I focus that every performance is engaging and impactful, so I can give my best on stage.

How do you maintain a connection with your fans, and what role do they play in your creative process?

I stay connected with my fans through social media platforms, where I engage with them directly through live streams and interactions. Meeting them in person at events and shows also helps strengthen this bond. Their feedback and support play a role in my creative process and inspiring me to continue evolving as an artist.

You have a significant presence in the fashion world. How do you see the relationship between your music and fashion influencing each other?

Music and fashion are deeply intertwined, both serving as powerful forms of self-expression. I believe that when I present myself well, it enhances my confidence and performance. Therefore, I always strive to look my best, whether on stage or in public. This attention to fashion not only complements my music but also reflects my personal style and enhances my overall artistic image.

What advice would you give to young, aspiring musicians who look up to you and hope to follow in your footsteps?

My advice is to stay true to yourself and embrace your uniqueness. Don’t be discouraged by setbacks; perseverance is key. Even when I’ve worked on projects that didn’t initially meet my expectations, I’ve always gone back and refined every detail until I was satisfied. Keep working on your craft, and let your passion and authenticity guide you through your journey.
