IN CONVERSATION WITH STEYA

Interview by SAMO ŠAJN

STEYA is an emerging Belgian DJ/producer making waves with her debut EP on IMF, becoming only the ninth artist to release a full body of work on Marcel Fengler’s influential label. Since breaking through in 2022, the Berlin-based artist has become a key name on the scene, regularly performing at RSO Berlin, Grelle Forelle in Vienna, and major events like Tomorrowland, Exhale, Rex Club, and Basement NYC.

Can you tell us about the inspiration and creative process behind your debut EP, ‘Dopamine’?

The inspiration for my debut EP, “Dopamine,” came from the intense emotions and energy of the dancefloor. I aimed to capture that euphoria and connection in my music. The creative process involved experimenting with techno elements and blending personal experiences with club energy. The tracks evoke a sense of journey and immersion, reflecting the physical and emotional highs and lows of my passion for techno music.

You've been a regular at iconic venues like RSO Berlin and Grelle Forelle. How have these experiences influenced your music and production style?

Regularly performing at these venues has greatly influenced my music and production style. Their exceptional sound systems and passionate crowds have pushed me to refine my sound to meet high standards. Playing at these clubs has honed my technical skills and shaped my artistic vision, inspiring me to create music that resonates with both the dancefloor and my creative aspirations.

Your journey in the techno scene started as a raver in Antwerp. How did your early experiences in the club scene shape your career as a DJ and producer?

Early experiences in Antwerp’s club scene profoundly shaped my career as a DJ and producer. Immersing myself in the city’s nightlife, I developed a deep appreciation for the energy and connection created by techno music on the dancefloor. Dancing and listening to a range of DJs provided insights into crowd dynamics and set crafting. Antwerp’s diverse techno styles broadened my musical palette and inspired exploration of various subgenres. This foundation has been crucial in developing my unique sound, blending intensity with emotion.

You’ve described 'Knights of the Jaguar' as a staple childhood anthem. How significant was it for you to have Rolando remix a track on your debut EP?

Having Rolando remix a track on my debut EP was incredibly significant, as ‘The Knight Of The Jaguar’ deeply influenced my early love for techno. Collaborating with him felt like coming full circle. His remix added a unique depth and emotion that only someone with his talent and history could bring. It was an honor to have one of my musical heroes contribute, and his influence elevated the entire project.

‘Dopamine’ took two years of dedicated studio time to complete. What challenges did you face during this period, and how did you overcome them?

The journey was challenging, balancing creative vision with technical precision. I often reworked tracks to perfect the blend of emotion and sound quality, while self-doubt and creative blocks were significant hurdles. I addressed these by taking breaks for fresh perspectives and seeking feedback from trusted peers. The support of family, friends, and mentors was crucial, teaching me valuable lessons and leading to an EP that truly reflects my dedication and passion for music.

'Neon Reecho', 'Elysian', and 'Prototype X' are notable tracks that helped establish your reputation. How do you feel your sound has evolved since these releases?

My sound has evolved. Initially, I focused on powerful, high-energy dancefloor tracks that defined my style and connected with my audience. Now, my music is more nuanced, with complex arrangements and a wider range of textures and atmospheres, reflecting my growth as an artist.

Hertz and Rolando have added their unique touch to your EP with their remixes. How did these come to fruition, and what was your experience like working with these talented artists?

Having Hertz and Rolando remix tracks on my EP was a dream come true. I chose them because their music had significantly influenced my journey. Hertz brought his meticulous production and deep sound design to the "Dopamine" remix, while Rolando infused "Things You Never Said" with his signature Detroit techno vibe, enhancing its emotional depth and rhythm. It’s a privilege to have both on my debut EP.

You have played at major events like Tomorrowland and Exhale. How do these large-scale performances differ from your sets in more intimate venues, and which do you prefer?

Playing at major events like Tomorrowland and Exhale is thrilling due to the energy and large crowds. Intimate venues offer a closer, more personal connection. Interestingly, the Rave Cave at Tomorrowland felt intimate despite the festival's scale. I value both: large events are exhilarating, while smaller venues provide deeper connections, each contributing uniquely to my growth as an artist.

Reflecting on your journey so far, what is a piece of advice you would give to your younger self when you were just starting out in the music industry?

My advice for starting out in the music industry is to trust the process and stay true to your artistic vision. Avoid getting caught up in trends or comparing yourself to others. Focus on developing your unique sound and remain committed to your passion for fulfilling, sustainable growth. Embrace challenges as learning opportunities, and remember that perseverance and authenticity are crucial for building a meaningful music career.

What’s next for you, any exciting projects or plans you can share with us?

Next up, I'm thrilled to be working on several exciting projects. I have a collab in the pipeline with OGUZ for the upcoming HARDPROOF VA, which I'm really looking forward to releasing. Additionally, I'm working on a remix collab with Marcel Fengler for the new imprint Misguided by DLV.

Beyond these collaborations, I'm continuing to evolve my sound and explore new creative avenues in techno. I'm excited about the future and the opportunities it holds for me to grow as an artist.
