words by JOIAH LUMINOSA
Art Basel Miami Beach returns from December 5–8, 2024, with an exciting and diverse program that marks a new chapter for the fair under the leadership of Director Bridget Finn. This year’s edition brings together over 250 leading galleries from 39 countries and territories, providing a platform to experience the very best in modern and contemporary art. With an expanded focus on emerging voices, monumental works, and experimental projects, Art Basel Miami Beach 2024 is set to be an unforgettable experience for collectors, art lovers, and cultural enthusiasts alike.
The 2024 edition includes renowned artists such as Cecily Brown, Jeff Koons, Yayoi Kusama, and Mark Bradford, alongside emerging talents like Tschabalala Self and Julien Creuzet. Visitors will experience a rich diversity of works across various sectors, offering something for every taste and interest.
Meridians: One of the fair’s most experimental and highly anticipated sectors, Meridians showcases monumental works that push the boundaries of artistic expression. Curated for the first time by Yasmil Raymond, formerly of MoMA, this sector presents 17 projects, most of which were created this year, alongside key historical pieces. Highlights include a monumental photogram by Peruvian artist Roberto Huarcaya, a striking bronze sculpture by Rachel Feinstein, and a large-scale work by Greek artist Antonis Donef, which combines personal memories and collective knowledge in a detailed collage. The sector explores themes of global climate change, the unexpected contingencies of democracy, and the power of personal and collective narratives. Other notable works include Metal Storm (2024) by Rachel Feinstein and La Famille dans la Joyeuse Verdure (2015-2019) by the Argentine collective Chiachio & Giannone, which pays tribute to the LGBTQ community and Indigenous Guaraní culture.
Positions: This dynamic sector shines a spotlight on young galleries and solo exhibitions by emerging and mid-career artists. This year’s edition presents 15 solo showcases, with 8 galleries making their debut at Art Basel Miami Beach. Notable highlights include works by Gordon Robichaux (New York), who will present shrine works derived from the archives of Chinese-Spanish-Filipino-American artist Agosto Machado. Brazilian collective MAHKU, formed by the Huni Kuin Indigenous People, will showcase paintings inspired by sacred ayahuasca chants, while Zimbabwean artist Terrence Musekiwa will present new sculptures blending African maximalism with contemporary materials. Other works include the ergonomic sculptures by Jimena Croceri from Argentina and a cyborg-garden installation by Julieta Tarraubella from Buenos Aires.

Survey: Celebrating art history, Survey features rare and significant works from mid-20th century masters like Huguette Caland and Barkley L. Hendricks, examining the legacies and cultural narratives of past generations.
