words by SONNY NGO
After months of speculation, the most-wanted job in fashion has finally been filled. Matthieu Blazy has been officially appointed as the new creative director of Chanel, putting an end to all previous rumours. Blazy has been at the helm of Bottega Veneta since 2021 and will now be responsible for all haute couture, ready-to-wear, and accessories collections at the French Maison.
During the interim period where Chanel was left without artistic director, following the sudden departure of Virginie Viard, the position remained open. In the end however, Blazy has been tapped to take over the House with his impressive track record. Prior to his work at Bottega, he has contributed to the worlds of Calvin Klein and Céline when he worked with Raf Simons and Phoebe Philo respectively.
Alain Wertheimer, Global Executive Chairman, and Leena Nair, Global CEO of Chanel share that they are confident that Blazy will continue to shape what’s next and write a new page in Chanel’s creations. Likewise, Bruno Pavlosvsky, president of Chanel, states that he is delighted to welcome the French-Belgian designer to the Maison.
“I am thrilled and honoured to join the wonderful house of Chanel. I look forward to meeting all the teams and writing this new chapter together,” Blazy expressed.
In the shifting sands of the fashion landscape, British designer Louise Trotter, known for her work at Carven, is confirmed to succeed Blazy at Bottega starting in January, while he is set to make his debut show next year October in Paris. In the meantime, the creative studio of the House will be hosting the ready-to-wear show and couture collections.
