After WEEKS of speculations, it is finally official! Glenn Martens is the new creative director of Maison Margiela, succeeding John Galliano.
Galliano announced his departure on 11th December 2024 with a heartfelt message on his Instagram, saying: “Today is the day I say Goodbye to Maison Margiela. My heart overflows with joyous gratitude, and my soul smiles. For I am 14 years old today—14 years sober. Living a life better than I ever dreamt possible, and this is thanks to two people-two truly beautiful people whom I both love and cherish. They, however, are too humble to allow me to mention their names here. We know who they are, and I will be forever indebted to them, forever grateful.”
Glenn Martens, a current creative director at Diesel has recently made a decision to close his own label Y/Project, stirring gossip that it was a step he took before taking over Maison Margiela. Martens is a Belgian designer with education at Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. Sharing the same roots and alma mater as Maison’s founder Martin Margiela is a true full circle moment. Martin first started his brand in 1988, and has had the fashion world wrapped around his finger ever since he presented his first collection of Spring/Summer 1989. It was there, Margiela showed probably the most iconic shoes, tabis.
With Martin Margiela being the father of deconstructed tailoring, it actually comes as no surprise that Glenn, famous for his avant-garde silhouettes and reconstructed denim looks, was selected to shape this legendary house. With a big job comes a big responsibility, and everyone will be closely watching how Glenn approaches his new task, keeping the spirit of Martin alive while bringing his own vision. Without further ado, peak some of the most memorable work of Glenn Martens. Do you see a match? We most certainly do!
