STRANDS & STRUCTURES: A VISUAL EXPLORATION OF HAIR SCULPTURES IN ACCRA’S ANTHROPOCENE
This Saturday, February 22, 2025, OSCAM Amsterdam unveils STRANDS & STRUCTURES, a powerful photo-documentary exhibition curated by Esmeralda Tan. In its second international showcase, the exhibition highlights the visionary work of Asia Clarke, a Canadian-born Afro-Caribbean multidisciplinary artist, and Christian Saint, a Ghanaian artist, film director, and creative producer. Through evocative imagery, it examines Afro hair sculptures within Accra’s evolving landscapes, unraveling deep connections between hair, identity, and the Anthropocene.
More than just a visual journey, STRANDS & STRUCTURES pulls audiences into the creative process with behind-the-scenes footage, immersive soundscapes, and interviews with local community members, led by Ghanaian journalist Brian Owusu-Konadu. Clarke, known for her futuristic portrayals of the African diaspora, and Saint, a storyteller dedicated to preserving African narratives, merge their artistic languages to challenge perceptions of cultural identity and transformation.
Join OSCAM Amsterdam on 22 February at 7 PM for the opening night, with the exhibition running until 28 February. Step into Accra’s evolving artistry—where hair is both sculpture and statement.
