IN CONVERSATION WITH OLIVIA HOLT
interview by JANA LETONJA
Olivia Holt is making her mark on Hollywood her way as both an actress and musician. She stars in Sony’s horror romantic comedy ‘Heart Eyes’, which released in theatres on 7th February. Most recently, we’ve been able to watch Olivia in a guest starring role alongside Stephanie Hsu in Peacock’s dark comedy ‘Laid’.
Olivia, you’re starring in the horror romantic comedy ‘Heart Eyes’, which just premiered. Can you tell us more about your character and the story of this film?
The story of this film follows a serial killer who targets couples on Valentine’s Day. I play the role of Allie, an extremely strong willed, opinionated, sometimes neurotic, but always a bad ass woman.
How does the film combine elements of horror and comedy?
Our movie has loads of nods to iconic horror films and romantic comedies. So while you’re constantly on the edge of your seat, anticipating what our serial killer is going to do next, or who they are going to kill next, you’re also in the middle of a love story, with so much comedic relief.
What was the most challenging aspect of bringing your character to life in ‘Heart Eyes’?
One of the many things that I love about Alli is that she’s not just one note. She has so many beautiful and complicated qualities about her. She’s human so it was always very important to me to keep her grounded and to lean in to all of the wit and sarcasm and charm she has, and whatever was written on the page to amplify it as much as I could, and to keep the audience falling in love with her.
Most recently, we’ve seen you guest-starring on Peacock’s ‘Laid’ alongside Stephanie Hsu. How was your experience on the show?
I loved working on this show. It was short, but so incredibly deliciously sweet. Some of the most talented actors I’ve gotten to work with in my career so far. I’m such a fan of everyone involved and of this show.
In 2023, you also made your Broadway debut as Roxie Hart in ‘Chicago’. What was that experience like? How did it feel to step into such an iconic role?
This was truly one of the most exciting times in my life and career so far. One of the most challenging, but most fun jobs I’ve ever taken on. Stepping into Roxie’s shoes was all things physically, emotionally, and mentally challenging. But every show, I discovered a new choice and a new quirk to add of my own. To be a part of a show that is iconic as ‘Chicago’ was honestly so surreal. This company made me feel right at home from day one and for that I’m forever grateful. I hope I get to do it again someday.
You’ve successfully balanced acting with your music career. How do you manage the demands of both worlds?
It’s definitely a tricky one to navigate, especially if you want to put your all into both. I never want to half ass anything, and I always want to be fully present in everything that I do, professionally and personally. I’m not sure if I found the perfect balance yet, but performing is in my bones and to do both is the ultimate dream for the rest of my career.
As someone with a strong social media presence, how do you feel about using platforms like Instagram to connect with your fans?
I think social media is the perfect way to connect with fans. They get a little sneak peek into what projects I’m up to, but also into my life. I love showing off my dog, Roger. And I also love getting to hear from them. Their love and support means more to me than they’ll ever know.
How would you describe your style, both in terms of fashion and in your work?
My style is always changing, but a pair of blue jeans and a white tee and some sneakers is my old faithful, and right now I’m a sucker for a sophisticated, chic look.
Looking ahead, what’s next for you? Are there any new projects, both in acting and music, that you’re particularly excited about?
I feel incredibly grateful and have a very exciting year ahead. Currently, I’m riding the high of the release of ‘Heart Eyes’. I’m now on my way to film a new movie that I’m very excited about, called ‘This is Not a Test’, and have another movie releasing later this year. As for music, I’m enjoying finding my sound and I’m loving making music that feels the most authentic to me and can’t wait for people to hear it. Maybe one day soon.
