IN CONVERSATION WITH BILLY MAGNUSSEN

interview JANA LETONJA

Actor and producer Billy Magnussen most recently starred in the remake ‘Road House’ and action comedy ‘Lift’. Currently, we’re able to watch him in the lead role in the indie feature film ‘Coup!’ opposite Peter Sarsgaard, which was theatrically released on 2nd August. Later this year, Billy will be seen in the highly acclaimed HBO series ‘The Franchise’.

Billy, 2024 started out very strong for you, with starring in three feature films. One of them was the remake of ‘Road House’, opposite Jake Gyllenhaal. What excited you the most about this film any your role as one of the main villains in the film?

First off, to work in this industry is a blessing because it is so challenging to "break-in", and to just get opportunities to work on such films as ‘Road House’ is exciting in itself.  The most exciting part?  Working with Doug. He is one of the most prolific directors of our time. I also loved rubbing oil all over Jake and Connor. Slippery SOBs.

Another project this year has been the Netlix action comedy ‘Lift’ alongside Kevin Hart. What did you enjoy the most about this amazing comedy?

Working with such an awesomely outstanding, international cast. Kevin is the man, Vincent is a legend, Ursula is loco is the best way, Gugu is a queen, Yun Jee is an angel,  Viveik is a pro, and our director rocked us all the way home.

Currently, we can watch you in indie feature ‘Coup!’, which you also executive produced.  Tell us more about the film, your character, and what inspired it.

Austin Stark and Joey Schuman are the true kings of this film. They wrote an awesome script, which inspired a bunch of artists to show up and give it their all. I play a character named JC Horton, who is a journalist that writes a lot of bullshit just to sound interesting. The film really centers around the idea of hypocrisy and the dangers it may cause.

You started your career on stage before venturing to TV and film. What ignited your passion for performance and acting, and how did your career begin?

What really started my career were the people that supported and shared love with me. Their encouragement and reinforcement gave me the ammunition to venture out and make some loud noise. Having some success has only thrown gasoline onto the fire. It’s funny, I recognize that my passion will change with each project. Life is a piece of art as well and it is fun to experience new colors.

Having worked on many TV and film projects, which one impacted you the most, both personally and professionally?

‘Coup!’ was very impactful because it was the first film with my production company, HappyBad Bungalow. My partners Shane Andries and Anne Hollister are the best people to work with. To see something come together with this group of people is one of the best gifts I can receive.

What do you find creatively the most fulfilling about acting?

Creatively, without a doubt, continually the joy of play. Just dreaming, playing, laughing and living in a world of make-believe.

Is there a genre or role you haven’t done yet, but would really love to explore next?

Yes, so many. Could I point to something? No, but I am excited to see what will present itself to me.

‘Coup!’ has been produced under your production company HappyBad Bungalow. What inspired you to launch your own production company, and what kind of projects are you striving to work on?

I wanted a community of artists that encourage and support each other so that each and every individual can blossom into their best selves. As a company, we are genre agnostic, we choose people that are filled with passion and love for their work, so global audiences can feel the healing power of entertainment.

What are the things you enjoy most in your free time? Tell us also something about yourself that would surprise us.

Sharing time with friends and family is everything to me. After that, I would say that golf is one of the favorite things to do in my free time. What a wonderful sport. It’s a place to practice focus, stillness and being in the moment. It is a lot like acting. Good moment or bad moment, you have to keep going.

Something about me that may surprise readers is that I love gardening. Communicating with nature is a blessing. Anything can grow as long as you take care of it and nurture it.

What can you share with us about your upcoming projects for this and next year?

They are going to be freaking awesome.
