IN CONVERSATION WITH
MORENA BACCARIN

interview by JANA LETONJA

Actress Morena Baccarin will be reprising her role in the third installment of ‘Deadpool’ franchise, ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’, which is premiering today (26th July). She also recently appeared in an episode of CBS’s ‘Fire Country’, with her character’s spin-off ‘Sheriff County’ set to premiere in the 2025-2026 season.

Morena, we’ll able to watch you in the highly anticipated third installment of ‘Deadpool’ franchise, ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’. What can the fans expect from this installment?

If I told you, I’d have to kill you. But seriously, I don’t know how to describe it. It takes ‘Deadpool’ to a whole new level.

You’ve been part of this franchise since 2016. What do you love the most about your character Vanessa, and what excites you the most about the franchise itself?

It’s amazing to play a role and be in a film that breaks the mold in every way. Vanessa is funny, smart, vulnerable, crass, tough, unusual. I could go on and on. The film is always so real and unexpected at the same time. It’s a thrill to do.

Which out of all three films challenged you as an actress the most, and why?

The second film was really tough. We shot all those ethereal after world scenes under water first to see if we could get something cool. Ultimately, it didn’t make the film, but I had to shoot in a massive tank with the apartment scene submerged under water and act like I wasn’t 20 feet deep. It was really scary and really hard. I did not love it.

Recently, we’ve also seen your guest starring on an episode of ‘Fire Country’, with your character getting a spin-off series ‘Sheriff County’ in 2025. Tell us more about this project and how it came about?

I was asked if I would consider guest starring on ‘Fire Country’ with the hopes of a spin-off. I was very excited right away. We had to work out some logistics  about locations and all that, but after that it was just about seeing if the character had legs. I am so excited to start shooting that. I love the ‘Fire Country’ family and show, and my spin-off will have that same heart and heart stopping action. Mickey Fox is a complex and great character. I relate a lot to her. She wants to do her best always and sometimes is faced with her own shortcomings. It’s also an amazing story about the town and the people, and how complicated relationships are.

How did your career in acting begin? What ignited your passion for performance?

I grew up around the arts. My family back in Brazil were very involved. My mom was an actress in Brazil and I grew up in the theatre. I must have absorbed it through osmosis. When I decided to go to LaGuardia High School, I really fell in love with acting.

Out of all the roles you’ve worked on so far, which one made the biggest impact on you both professionally and personally, and why?

I think playing Jessica Brody was a huge growth moment as an actor. It was a different kind of role and I really had to throw myself in. It earned me an Emmy nomination and showed me that sometimes giving your heart and soul hurts, but is satisfying.

Having Brazilian heritage, how do you make sure to involve it in your everyday life?

I carry it with me always. I speak the language and love the food. I cook Brazilian food a lot for my family.

You are also a mom. How do you keep your priorities straight and make sure to have the balance between work and personal life

It’s a mess, all the time. I am always forgetting something or someone. I think if I had more time, I could probably be better at my job, but my family is everything to me so I weigh every job and every decision on how it would affect them.

Besides acting, you are actively involved with the International Rescue Committee. Tell us more about their mission and your work with them

I am invoked with two non profits actually. IRC was first. They do all kinds of work abroad and in the US to help refugees. It’s an amazing organization. They have reintegration services and education services and all sorts of support. Please consider donating.

I am also on the board of an amazing program called Waterwell. Until recently, they were the education program at PPAS, and also an organization that makes amazing art with civic minded matters.

After ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’, where will we be seeing you in next, besides of course ‘Sheriff County’ next year?

Hopefully a film I shot last year will be out soon. Stay tuned.
