IN CONVERSATION WITH ELISE KOLFF

Content creator, creative director and model Elise Kolff traveled to Indonesia where she tried out the iconic Timberland Boatshoe. Exchanging about travel, culture and self-discovery, Numero Netherlands sat down with the influencer to discuss how Timberland’s Boatshoe is the perfect pair for adventurous people yearning for authentic experiences.

What does traveling mean to you and what kind of person are you while traveling?

I find travelling very important, it is an opportunity to unwind and feel free. While travelling I don’t have any worries on my mind, and the best version of myself comes out. I am a person who cannot sit still, so a beach holiday is not for me. I like to do something productive and active during my holidays. I prefer to be on the road all the time, looking for a new adventure.

Is there a specific country where you have travelled to that has a significant meaning for you? Which ones and why?

Yes of course my motherland Nigeria, I am half Nigerian and so that has a special meaning for me. When I go there, I feel grateful to have the opportunity to see my mother’s country, visit my family and of course eat the best food.

What do you think of the versatility and style of the Boatshoes during your daily activities in Indonesia?

I love the Boatshoes aesthetic, it really is a classic pair that instantly makes your outfit more interesting. One thing I find most important when it comes to fashion is comfort. When I feel comfortable, I feel at my best. The Boatshoes brought that out best.

Can you tell us more about the five locations in Indonesia you chose for this campaign? What makes some of these locations special to you?

The locations I had chosen all had something to do with me. For example, the football pitch was my personal favourite. I played football with passion for 13 years, something I always had a lot of fun doing. When I had discovered this location, I felt immense joy and nostalgia. The field was so beautiful along with nature. On the field, little kids were playing football, while I was shooting the campaign all the kids were looking at me, it felt awkward but heartwarming at the same time. When we were done shooting, I asked them if they wanted to join. So, we all played football together. This was perhaps one of my most enjoyable moments of this trip. Yet another location, was filmed on a scooter. Scooter riding especially in Lombok made me feel so free. The scooters go way too fast, which I enjoy a lot. I am always in my own little world at times like that.

What do you think are the essential qualities of a good travel shoe?

Versatility and comfort. A shoe that you can put on for different occasions, that is not too heavy nor too hot.

How does this model fit into your vision of the perfect travel shoe?

It is very airy for a Boatshoe, which makes it even more comfortable. It is also easy to carry around, on holiday I always take far too many (unnecessary) clothes with me and my suitcase ends up really packed. One good thing was that the shoe is not too big so I could always find a spot for it. Another packing struggle is choosing which pair to bring. Because I want a shoe that is versatile and works with any outfit. It is always a struggle to make a decision. I was really surprised at how flexible the boatshoe was while travelling I could put it on for any occasion. This made the whole packing process way easier.

How do you connect your personal style with your cultural background during your travels?

When I was younger I was much more myself while travelling. I wore clothes I always wanted to wear but didn’t dare at home. This was because I was afraid of opinions, and on holidays there was no one I knew anyway. These days, I confidently wear my outfits at home. I always include that bit of challenging myself in styling my outfits on holiday, to wear clothes that are out of my normal comfort zone.

In what way do the Timberland Boatshoes allow you to express your style and identity?

I would describe my style as unisex streetwear mixed with classic style. At least this is where I want to go. Finding style and identity is a long path that can change along the way. I like to dress in a more masculine/tomboy way, it’s makes me feel the most comfortable and confident. The Boatshoe is a perfect example of a unisex shoe. It fits my style and my shoe collection perfectly. Neat and classic shoes are the most appealing to me and a good pair holds a kind of energy that gives a lot of attitude. The Boatshoe is a good example of a bold shoe with fine tones that don’t scream too much. I love its versatility, it goes perfectly with baggy shorts, as well as neat trousers.

What are your best travel tips for people looking to explore Indonesia ?

I would advise people to not only go to Bali but also explore the other islands. Indonesia is such a beautiful country, all the islands are so different and have their own cultures and people.

Do you have any recommendations for hidden gems on the islands that tourists often miss?

I’m not going to gate-keep this for you guys. Go discover Lombok, I had the best time on the island during my trip. Located close to mountain Rinjani, is a hidden gem called Tetebatu, one of the most beautiful places I have been. It is a village where not too many tourists come yet. Everything still feels real and authentic and you will find the most beautiful views, rice fields and waterfalls.
